CS373 Spring 2022: Audie Bethea

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I spent some time working on work for other classes that is due this upcoming week. I think that I’ve managed my time pretty well, and although I have a busy weekend, I should be fine once next week rolls around. The pacing of work for me lately has been pretty lax.

What’s in your way?

At the moment, there isn’t a whole lot in my way- at least workload wise. However, there’s a lot of graduation stuff that needs to be taken care of, so I’ve just been trying to get through it in bits and pieces. That way, when finals roll around, I’m also not running around figuring graduation stuff out.

What will you do next week?

I think my team and I are going to try and complete as much of Phase 4 of the semester project as we can this week, because the first week of May is gonna be pretty busy for us, with finals and all. Also, we won’t be scrambling to turn in our project, as we usually are.

What did you think of Paper #13: What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You?

I think that this was the most important paper that we’ve read thus far in the semester. All engineers recognize the value of technical information, but few recognize the extent of harassment and exploitation that women endure in this field. This paper provided some very raw anecdotes regarding harassment in the workplace, which I think is crucial, though not enough. Really, it doesn’t feel like there are enough resources in the world to prepare for seeing someone you care about go through that. It’s really upsetting.

What was your experience of subqueries and refactoring?

I felt pretty comfortable with the idea of subqueries, though I had a little bit of trouble conceptualizing all of the different types of joins and their use cases. Refactoring is a crucial skill to have, regardless of the situation, so I’m glad we touched on that too.

What made you happy this week?

I finally got to float the river in San Marcos with some of my friends this afternoon! It totally wore me out, but I’ve been wanting to do this ever since I came to this school, so it was worth it to get out and do it.

What’s your pick-of-the-week?

My pick of the week is MongoDB. Although less suitable for this class than a traditional relational database, I’ve been using MongoDB for my Cloud Computing class recently, and it’s pretty interesting to see a different take on database relationships than I’m used to.
